My Dream Job

This is definitely one of my more random posts, but I just thought that by putting it out into the Universe, it tells the Universe that this is exactly what I want.

Recently I went to a birthday party and while I was there, my stepmom arrived with a newspaper article.  She handed it to me and said, “this is your dream job and you should apply”.

Needless to say, she wasn’t wrong.  I have been looking for a job that combined writing and travelling for the last 12 years and although I’ve sent CV’s through, sent articles to numerous online Travel Magazines and even sent an article to Contiki to be part of their blog; I never even received a response.

Now, I do realise that companies are inundated with people like me who would do anything to have their dream job, it would be nice to occasionally get a response, even if it just says “I’m sorry you didn’t get picked, but keep trying”.

At least if they did this, you would know that it is worth the effort and should keep trying.  Eventually as we all do, I got busy.  Busy with work, busy with life etc. and I genuinely forgot about it.

Then this article in the Sunday Times.  The position was one of four to do with social media and a very cool travel company called Busabout.  I wanted to apply for the blogging position because ultimately that is what I would like to do with my life.  As much as I enjoy taking photos along the way, writing far outweighs this.

I had to come up with a 60 second video (not long enough in my opinion) of why you would be perfect for the job.  The only problem was, I kept second guessing my efforts and it took me ages to get the video just right.

I looked at all the others that had sent their videos through and a lot were just of the person sitting in front of the camera and speaking about why they would be perfect.  I wanted to do something completely different.  I wanted to use some of the videos from my 3 month trip around South Africa and just do a voice over, so this is duly what I did.  Out of thousands of videos, I managed to get it down to like 20 (with a few still photos thrown in here and there).  It also took me a good 10 times to get the audio right (the last one still wasn’t perfect but I just couldn’t do it one more time).

I love the idea of this job so much that even if I don’t get picked, I reckon I’m going to take my savings and do it anyways.  Yes, I won’t be able to go for as long as the job would have allowed, but I’m tired of waiting for my dream job to come to me.  This time I’m going to make it happen myself.  Still holding thumbs I get it, but either way this year I’m doing a hop on hop off bus tour through Europe and *SPOILER ALERT* I’m going to write about it along the way! 🙂
